BAROQUE VIOLIN "SAN MARCO"
This powerful painting of Vittore Carpaccio from the year 1516 gave the first impulse for the genesis
of the baroque violin "San Marco". It shows the heraldic animal of the city, the lion of St Mark as it claims the supremacy
of the city-state over land and sea. The right forefoot is put on an book with the letters: "PAX TIBI MARCE EVANGELISTA
MEUS". The legend tells that with those words spoken by an angel, St Mark was promised to find his final rest here in the
lagoon. Centuries later, in the year 828 his relics were brought to Venice in an adventurous way, and since then he is the
patron saint of the city, symbolized by the winged lion.
